Some years ago, I went to visit my sister in Mississippi. On this Saturday evening, sitting in their home, my brother-in-law was reading the classified ads of the local news paper. I currently was not paying attention to him until he begin laughing. We all turned and asked what he was laughing about. He stated, “There is an ad for a pastor in the classified ads. Who would do that?” I admit, I did chuckle a little as I have never saw an ad like that before.
The next morning, I was going to visit with my sister at their church. As I have known the pastor for many years. My dad had helped to build their church and gym. They have known my family for years. I woke up that Sunday morning preparing to attend church, getting some prayer time and Bible study reading when I heard God speak clearly to me. Go to that church from the ad in the news paper.
I was stunned at what I had heard. When I was young in the Lord, I would always ask the Lord to confirm to me when he was speaking to me. But after years of hearing His voice, I had no doubt what it sounds like. And this day was no exception. I knew what he told me. So I shared with my sister what the Lord said and looked for that ad in the newspaper.
Upon arriving in the church parking lot, I let out a disappointment sigh as I read the church sign. “First Baptist Church”. Now I have nothing against baptist, but I attend a Pentecostal church and there is a difference on how we worship. But none the less, I parked and went up to the door. “Hello, Are you a minister?” said the guy at the door. “Yes I am” I replied. This guy begin to explain, “Great! We had another pastor that was suppose to preach for us today, but called at the last minute and said he could not come. Will you minister to us today?”
You could only imagine the shock that I had felt. I quickly said “Yes” and was taken to the platform of the church. After the song service the offering was taken and then they invited me to preach the word of God. My sermon that day was about the importance of the cross. And I closed my message out with prayer. They thanked me for the message and invited me to come back again. In my mind, I thought, “No way will I be back.” But little do I know what God wants to do.
That evening, I shared with my family what happened. They too were shocked about that. So I purposed in my heart to go hear some preaching myself that night at the pentecostal church. Getting ready for church that evening, God spoke to me and said, “Go back to that church.” I sighed and said, “Ok God.”
Upon walking in the door of the church again that evening, the head deacon spoke and said, “I am glad that you are back again. We had another pastor who was suppose to be here with us tonight, but called at the last minute and said they could not come. Would you be willing to preach to us again tonight?” I quickly agreed. That evening I preached on the Holy Ghost and how that it can change your life.
I had an altar call after my message that evening and there was one lady that came to the front. I walked over to her and laid my hands on her head and said, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost” and this woman begin speaking in tongues like they did in Acts 2. I then gave the mic back to the deacon and sat down. That man got up to the pulpit and said, “Folks, I have heard about it in other churches, I have read it in the Bible, and I have never seek it. But my wife would not do something like this unless it was God.”
So what I am saying to you in this post today, If you are seeking a job to do for the Lord, when he speaks, even if it sounds crazy, and it might not be what you want to do or where you want to go, just do it. Let God use you. You will NEVER know what God might want to do for someone else.
What is your calling?
Where does God want you to go?
Can you follow the voice of God?
Can you speak the word of God into someone else’s life?
